3 free agent offensive linemen the Chicago Bears can still sign
By Ryan Heckman
The Chicago Bears could sign free agent offensive lineman J.C. Tretter
Lastly, the Bears could go after another interior lineman with some versatility. J.C. Tretter is still somehow unsigned, but the 31-year-old has plenty of football left in him. Just take this stat for an example: Tretter has started 16 games each of the last five seasons. Now, last year of course was the first 17-game season so it makes the first game Tretter had missed in five years.
Last season, Tretter earned a PFF grade of 79.4 which is far above average. He also went through a stretch of over 1,600 pass blocking snaps since 2019 in which he did not allow a single quarterback hit.
Somehow, Tretter has not been voted to a Pro Bowl or All Pro team during his career, but has been one of the most consistent centers in all of football. He’s been consistently healthy and consistently great on the field.
The Bears have Lucas Patrick coming in as their starting center, but depending on where the Bears might view Tretter, they could play either position if he was to be signed. In the case that Tretter was signed, the Bears’ offensive line immediately turns from a question mark to a potential strength.
