10 biggest Chicago Bears needs going into the NFL Draft
By Todd Welter
2. Wide Receiver
The Chicago Bears also need to get Justin Fields plenty of weapons for 2022.
The Chicago Bears entered the offseason with Darnell Mooney as the only wide receiver who caught a pass from Fields on the roster. Poles sat out on the NFL’s wide receiver crazy trade and top tier free-agent market.
Instead, he went with a calculated approach by signing Bryon Pringle, Equanimeous St. Brown, and David Moore.
Pringle was recently arrested and charged with reckless driving and driving on a suspended license. That arrest could cloud his future with the team.
Plus, Pringle, St. Brown, and Moore have had their struggles on the field in their careers. Although they still have the potential to be solid players. St. Brown and Moore have some familiarity with offensive coordinator Luke Getsy based on their days in Green Bay.
If the Bears deem Pringle’s transgression not big enough to warrant being cut, he can be a reliable third wide receiver. Moore has deep threat potential.
These signings still leave the Chicago Bears without a number one wide receiver that is going to keep defensive coordinators up at night. Ownership, Poles, and the coaching staff are high on Mooney but he projects more as a great number two wide receiver.
Thankfully, the draft offers plenty of wide receivers on day two or three of the draft with the potential to be a number one wide receiver.
Also, Notre Dame’s Kevin Austin Jr. is a bigger Darnell Mooney-like receiver who could be around in the fifth round.
While the Chicago Bears have a chance to get some weapons for Fields in the draft, rookie wide receivers can take some time to develop.
The Bears are probably going to sit out the Deebo Samuel or A.J. Brown trade chase. One reason is they sat out the first round of the wide receiver trade carousel. The second reason is Poles seems focused on clearing up the Bears’ salary cap issues.
