Later on in the fourth round, the Bears go back to the defensive side of the ball and find some help at cornerback. Pittsburgh’s Damarri Mathis comes to the Bears here, and he has the potential to line up at a variety of positions.

Mathis stands 5-foot-11 and weighs 196 pounds, lacking top-end speed but possesses great ball skills. He is a strong, compact player who plays physical and is another one of those guys who can finish a tackle with authority.

Although he doesn’t have the elite speed, Mathis’ ability to shine in a zone scheme comes in handy for the Bears. He very well could transition inside to a slot role or even play some safety, depending on how Eberflus and Williams view him.

While not excelling in man-to-man, Mathis does his best work in zone when his reaction time comes up big on tape. He reads quarterbacks well and makes his move without wasting any time.

Over his last two seasons, Mathis has totaled 16 passes defensed and four interceptions.
