In the third round, the Bears turn their attention to the defensive side of the ball. One of their most underrated needs on this defense is still at safety. Eddie Jackson is going to start, as Matt Eberflus looks like he’ll give the former All Pro a shot in his scheme.

Other than Jackson, the Bears have DeAndre Houston-Carson and newly-signed Dane Cruikshank competing for a starting spot. Cruikshank gives the Bears some versatility as he’s played in a variety of spots in prior defenses, but he would end up being a fine starter.

However, with pick no. 71, the Bears get a sure fire starter to pair with Jackson as they select Illinois stud defensive back Kerby Joseph.

Joseph stands 6-foot-1 and weighs in around 200 pounds. He possesses solid athleticism in open space and uses his keen eyes to make plays on the ball. Last season, Joseph came up with five interceptions for the Illini and proved to be a guy who goes after the football. His length should be coveted by teams looking for a safety who can go up and make those big plays.

Joseph is also fairly aggressive in how he attacks pass catchers, at times giving them quite the hit to let them know he’ll be there all game long.
