Chicago Bears trade David Montgomery in this 2022 mock draft
By Ryan Heckman
For the second time in this draft, the Bears go offensive line — which sounds like the perfect amount of picks to spend up front. The first on a tackle, and now the Bears select a guard out of Virginia Tech, Lecitus Smith.
Smith is a 3-year starter with plenty of experience, and may be good enough to compete for a starting spot up front. At the moment, his competition looks to be Dakota Dozier, and Smith very well could win that battle.
At 6-foot-3, 315 pounds, Smith gives you the ideal overall size at the guard position. He is an athletic guy who excels in pass protection, specifically. His lateral movement is sufficient and he’s able to get out in front of the quicker pass rushers.
The area where Smith needs to improve is in run blocking, and specifically with his hand technique. That area is, of course, coachable. So, bringing a guy in who already pass blocks well is good enough in the fourth round. Growing in the run game will be imperative, but should Smith do so, he’ll be able to step into a starting role eventually.
