Chicago Bears trade David Montgomery in this 2022 mock draft
By Ryan Heckman
The Bears didn’t necessarily need to draft a running back this high, especially with Khalil Herbert more than able to carry the majority of the load. However, if a player like Dameon Pierce falls to this spot, he’s worth taking. It just so happened he was the best player on the board during this pick.
Losing Montgomery will be a tough pill to swallow, but if the Bears snag a back like Pierce to pair with Herbert, their back field will still be excellent.
For those who loved what Montgomery brought to the table, they’ll love Pierce. At 5-foot-10 and 218 pounds, he’s a strong frame and extremely difficult to bring down. His 4.58 time in the 40-yard dash doesn’t even come close to advertising his play speed. He’s got a second gear that he can hit and then, it’s off to the races.
Pierce is one of those hard-nosed runners who makes use of every single touch he gets. Last season with Florida, he averaged a touchdown every seven touches — mind-blowing efficiency.
The Bears feel great after trading Montgomery, because of the value they got in return and now have a replacement that can do a lot of the same things he could.
