Chicago Bears trade David Montgomery in this 2022 mock draft
By Ryan Heckman
With their second selection in the third round, at pick 89, the Bears start to attack the offensive line. But, how did they get here? This is the trade we’ve been patiently awaiting to hear about. Chicago decides to trade running back David Montgomery to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for two picks, no. 89 and no. 130. For a team ready to win now, this is a great deal for Buffalo as they’re just mussing a legitimate every-down running back, and they get it in Montgomery.
With the first of those picks from Buffalo, then, the Bears draft Arizona State offensive tackle Kellen Diesch.
We’ve mocked Diesch to the Bears in the past, and the one reason why is that he fits the type of player this coaching staff is searching for. Diesch stands 6-foot-7, weighing 301 pounds, and ran an eye-popping 4.89 in the 40-yard dash.
Sure, his frame screams “thin,” and he obviously knows this. Any offensive lineman standing that tall with weight to gain, with a relatively-respectable draft grade, knows he’ll have to pack on some mass. If he can do that wisely, then the sky is the limit for Diesch. The athleticism and quickness is there, which is huge in today’s NFL when he’s going up against the type of pass rushers we see nowadays.
Diesch’s lack of anchor is truly the only big red flag, and if he can pack on some mass there, he’ll be just fine. He packs a punch up top with great core strength, moves well and offers high-level hand strength as well.
