Chicago Bears wheel and deal, add 12 players in this 2022 mock draft
By Todd Welter
Chicago Bears’ cornerbacks struggled in coverage outside of Jaylon Johnson. Getting takeaways was a big problem with Johnson being the only Bears’ corner to get an interception.
The Bears have to upgrade at this premium position in both coverage and takeaways. The fourth round is where Poles addresses cornerback.
Poles probably will add a few veterans on one-year deals so that is another reason waiting until the fourth round to address this position will make sense.
McCollum would bring size and speed to the Bears secondary. He measured in at 6’2″ at the NFL Combine, posted a 4.33 40-yard dash, and 39.5 inch vertical jump. That is athleticism the Chicago Bears desperately need at this position.
He also had 13 career interceptions during his time at Sam Houston State and was part of their 2020-2021 FCS National Championship team. He also had 54 career pass breakups.
McCollum was set to go to Utah but decided at the last minute to stay close to home to play at Sam Houston State.
His slender frame and going up against FCS wide receivers is one reason his draft stock is not higher. He has the potential to be a starter for many years to come in Eberflus’ defense.
A few picks later Flott was there as one of the best players available. This was another chance to add depth at corner with a lot of potential if he can bulk up.
He has experience playing both slot and outside corner. Flott also had to cover some of the best wide receivers college football had to offer.
He allowed wide receivers he was covering to gain 249 yards last season.
Flott did not have a lot of interceptions at LSU but he has good coverage skills.
Flott is a project but he could turn into a good pro under the Bears coaching staff. He can also buy himself more time to develop if he can help on special teams.
