Pick Analysis. Washington State. Abraham Lucas. 48. player. 846. Scouting Report. Offensive Tackle

The Chicago Bears were back on the clock at pick 48 in the second round. This is the draft pick the Bears got from the Los Angeles Chargers in the Mack trade. One of the best players available happened to be an offensive lineman. The Bears need as many good players as possible to rebuild a line that can protect Fields.

The Chicago Bears still have major questions at the tackle position. Larry Borom had a decent rookie campaign at right tackle but it is still unknown where he will fit long term in the Bears’ new offensive scheme. Jenkins missed most of last season with a back injury. When he finally got some snaps at left tackle, he did not inspire confidence that he can protect Fields’ blindside long term.

Plus, Poles is looking for his offensive lineman to be stronger, leaner, and faster.

The 6-6, 315 pounds Abraham Lucas fits that description. He ran the second-fastest 40-yard dash for an offensive lineman at the NFL Combine.

That is one reason why it would not be surprising with Poles taking Lucas if he is still on the board like he was in this mock draft simulation.

Lucas had a great combine. He proved his strength in the bench press and his footwork in other drills.

NFL.com projects Lucas could be the Bears pick at this spot.

It would be more than just because he had a good combine. First, he was a four-year starter at Washington State. He is not a perfect prospect but he has a lot of positive attributes in his game.

Draftnetwork.com liked his game tape but feels he has room to grow. Profootballnetwork.com likes his athleticism but feels he still needs to improve as a run blocker.

"Lucas isn’t a perfect prospect despite his prowess in pass protection. He can still become more consistent in the running phase. And even though he’s a well-put-together tackle, he can add more raw power to his game. Nevertheless, the Washington State OT is a strong athlete with good intangibles and operational ability, and he can be a solid starter at the NFL level, with natural ability on the right side."

Pass blocking should not be a problem for Lucas as he allowed zero sacks last season and just four sacks total between his sophomore and junior year. He played in a pass-heavy offense so he will need to improve his run blocker. Otherwise, he checks the boxes of what the Bears are looking for in a lineman. He can come in and push Borom or Jenkins for the right tackle job.
