5 available bargain free agents the Chicago Bears could still sign
By Ryan Heckman
The Chicago Bears would get a bargain if they signed free agent wide receiver Sammy Watkins
This would be just the type of signing to drive a lot of Bears fans into a frenzy — and not the good kind. But, the team does need wide receivers. As it stands, Chicago has Darnell Mooney, Byron Pringle, Dazz Newsom and Equanimeous St. Brown as their top four wide receivers. Teams usually carry six receivers, and guys like St. Brown and Newsome might not even be good enough to make the final roster.
That’s where someone like Sammy Watkins actually makes a ton of sense. If the Bears drafted a receiver high (think second round) and added Watkins, their receiving core would look much better than it does right now.
Watkins would be no more than a rental for this season, but his speed and size would give Fields another guy he could possibly count on. Being a veteran and former first rounder, Watkins brings experience and has been around some winning teams over his tenure in the league.
The crazy part about Watkins is that he’s still only 28. That is shocking to learn, for most. But, he’s not old by any means and could even give the Bears a couple of solid years as a no. 4 type of guy. He’s not someone the Bears would count on to be anything more than a third or fourth option, but in that role, he’s a great option.
