With their second-to-last pick in the draft, the Bears select Tennessee defensive lineman Matthew Butler.

The Bears originally signed Larry Ogunjobi to become their starting three-technique, before having to let him walk due to a failed physical. Chicago quickly signed Tony Jones to come in and start, but Jones’ health is a bit of a question mark. Because of that, the Bears need someone else who can immediately step in if need be.

Butler will be a solid rotational three-technique to begin with, but could definitely develop into a starter at that spot if anything happened to Jones — or should the Bears not re-sign Jones down the line.

Butler stands 6-foot-4 and weighs just under 300 pounds, so he offers quite a bit of athleticism for the position. He is another one of those guys who plays bigger than his size and is sneaky strong. His upper body doesn’t get easily pushed around and his lateral footwork allows him to sneak through gaps to help stop the run.

If he is able to add a little more strength to his lower body, Butler will have a lengthy career and could be even more productive than he’s being projected to be coming out of college.
