5 bold trades shake up this Chicago Bears 2022 mock draft
By Ryan Heckman
Next up brings us to another trade by Poles, and this time it’s a highly-controversial one. Plenty of fans could get upset at a deal like this, and it makes sense. Fans are emotionally-connected to certain players, and a guy like David Montgomery is easy to love. However, running backs don’t get paid in today’s NFL and the Bears could use even more capital to address the entire roster.
The Bears send Montgomery to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for some valuable picks, falling at no. 89 and no. 130 overall. Montgomery gives the Bills exactly what their offense needs, while the Bears can continue their rebuild.
With the no. 89 selection, the Bears find a starting safety in Nick Cross. The Maryland standout is the perfect type of defensive back for Matt Eberflus, who is looking for pure athletes.
Cross stands six feet tall, weighing 212 pounds so he has some great size. However, don’t let that size fool you. This is a guy who ran a 4.34 at the Combine and provides a defense with sideline-to-sideline speed.
The bears have long-needed a guy like Cross in their secondary; someone who is not only quick, but lays down the law. Cross is always trying to get to the football and ensures the ball carrier feels his presence. He’s a physical player who will establish himself as a field general early and often. That’s the type of potential leader this defense has needed for a while now. He would be an excellent fit and one heck of a value at this point in the draft.
