Later on in the fifth round, Cole Kmet is officially put on notice. After being drafted high in the second round a couple of years ago, Kmet has not lived up to his billing. Now, that could also be partly on Matt Nagy. But, Kmet hasn’t looked the part.

The Bears are not bringing back veteran Jimmy Graham, but did re-sign Jesper Horsted who should see more action, finally. Now, they bring in SMU tight end Grant Calcaterra who had an interesting career trajectory. After playing for Oklahoma, Calcaterra actually called it quits. But, he later had a change of heart and returned to football at SMU.

Calcaterra is 6-foot-4 and weighs around 240 pounds. He’s got an athletic profile and is definitely more of a receiving tight end, which works to Fields’ advantage, here. For a tight end, Calcaterra has an impressive ability to make the tough catches. He uses his body well to get in position to make those tough grabs, too.

As for speed, which is what Eberflus is looking for, Calcaterra certainly has it. For a tight end, he ran an impressive 4.62 in his 40-yard dash. After the catch, Calcaterra immediately uses that speed to accelerate down the field. Back in 2018, Calcaterra only caught 26 passes at Oklahoma — but six were for touchdowns.

Last year at SMU, he caught 38 passes for 465 yards and four scores.
