3 ways the Chicago White Sox can counter the Twins signing Carlos Correa
By Todd Welter
The Chicago White Sox need to re-think addressing second base
The plan at second base appears to platoon Leury Garcia and recently signed Josh Harrison at second base. Before Correa signed with the Twins, that plan seemed like a good idea.
Now, the Chicago White Sox needs to re-think if putting two utility players at second is really the best way to win the AL Central.
A better idea is to make a last-minute push to sign Trevor Story. Story plays shortstop but the Sox can always move Tim Anderson to second. Imagine a starting infield featuring Yoan Moncada, Anderson, Story, and Jose Abreu.
That is a World Series-winning infield right there.
The Chicago White Sox also need to sign a right fielder
The Chicago White Sox plan at right field appears to platoon Adam Engel, Andrew Vaughn, and Gavin Sheets.
Engel is an excellent fielding outfielder but he has to prove he can stay healthy. Vaughn and Sheets are better suited to play first base or DH.
The Sox need to get a solid, reliable right fielder. They have let Kris Bryant and Nick Castellanos sign elsewhere. The Sox also could use a left-handed power bat.
Michael Conforto is still on the market and would fit in nicely into the Sox lineup.
He is coming off a down season with the New York Mets because of injuries. He is just two seasons removed from hitting 33 home runs.
Conforto also has a career .356 on-base percentage along with a career .824 on-base plus slugging percentage. He also has a career .987 fielding percentage.
The Sox could also sign him to a one-year deal as Conforto tries to recapture his value. If he has able to recapture his home run swing, the Chicago White Sox outfield would feature Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert, and Conforto. Plus, the Sox can use Engel to replace Jimenez in leftfield for late-inning defense. That would be another World Series-winning outfield.
Winning the World Series is what the Chicago White Sox should be focused on. They need to make sure the Twins do not alter the path toward winning the whole thing.
