Trading Khalil Mack allows the Chicago Bears to truly focus on building around Justin Fields

You build a team around a quarterback, period. That’s how you win in this league. In the case of a team like the Chargers, they had everything in place. They could afford to make bigger moves and add a guy like Mack.

The Bears are not there yet. Hopefully they get there in the future, and then Poles can start taking those types of risks. Right now, the Bears are not the Chargers or the Rams. They realized that this team must first be built around Fields.

Once the offense is in place and Fields has the protection and weapons he needs, then Poles can go out and make the bigger moves like Super Bowl-ready teams have done recently.

At the moment, Fields has Darnell Mooney and David Montgomery as his top weapons. We can’t even put Cole Kmet in that conversation, unless he finally shows something more than average play in his third season.

Fields needs a whole lot of help at receiver, and maybe even more importantly, he needs help up front. If Fields isn’t protected, he’s not going to get this team very far — or, at least, his own career and health won’t last too long.
