5 reasons the Chicago Bears were right to trade Khalil Mack
By Ryan Heckman
Trading Khalil Mack made sense for the Chicago Bears because of recent injuries and production
Khalil Mack was as important to this team as any player has been in the last decade. Everyone understands that. However, this was the right time to let go of him if Poles was thinking about the future.
Since his 12.0 sacks in 2018, Mack has not posted a double-digit sacks season. He still had a top-5 pressure rate in the NFL over the last several seasons combined, but the sacks just didn’t show up. In today’s NFL, pressures matter, but sacks matter more.
The quarterback talent is extremely high right now, and many of the top quarterbacks are young, mobile guys. Sacks have to be at the top of this defense’s priority list. They need to get to the quarterback.
Mack also missed 10 games due to injury last year and is 31 years old. The Bears had him for the thick of his prime, and he might have just one or two elite years left in him. Selling as high as they could, the Bears made the right call.
