We are now less than a week away from the beginning of the NFL’s legal tampering period, which starts this coming Monday, March 14. For the Chicago Bears, we shouldn’t expect too many major headlines right away.

When the Bears hired Ryan Poles to be their general manager, they understood his philosophy of building through the draft and spending wisely.

Already, Poles has reiterated the fact that he doesn’t plan to go after any first wave free agents. Instead, he’ll focus most of his energy on the second wave.

However, Poles should definitely keep an eye on some of those first wave guys. Just in case he can get the right guy for the job, he needs to keep his options open.

If the right player is available, the Chicago Bears should spend big on certain free agents.

There are key positions in which the Bears desperately need help. They will have a decent amount of cap space, too, especially if they decide to part ways with some veterans to open up additional cash.

It is understandable that Poles wants to be wise in terms of his finances. It’s refreshing, quite frankly. Ryan Pace wasn’t always that way. But, it could be said that being wise with your money also means to secure the correct players for their worthy price tag.

Poles knows that building a team through the draft is the way to go, but free agency exists for a reason. The first wave might be costly, but we could see a couple of particular players come to Chicago during that period of time.

It isn’t a foregone conclusion that Poles refuses to spend during the first wave. He’s just going to be cautious. If he’s willing to spend on some more notable names, then these five free agents should be way up on his list.
