The Chicago Bears should keep a close eye on Zion Johnson at the NFL Combine
Senior
College: Boston College
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 316 lbs
Best trait: Technique in zone scheme
Maybe the best all-around, realistic prospect for the Bears to snag with their second-round pick, is Boston College guard Zion Johnson. The connection Johnson will share with new general manager Ryan Poles is an important one: they are both former Boston College Eagles.
Aside from that connection, Johnson truly is worthy of drafting high. There isn’t a glaring weakness to his game. Instead, he’s very good in a lot of areas. He’s a sound technician, overall, and is rarely caught out of position.
Johnson is a smart player. His football IQ is as high as they come on the offensive line, which is apparent when watching his hand placement and footwork. Johnson will fit best in a zone-heavy run scheme, which is exactly the type of offense we’re going to see from Luke Getsy, coming from the run-heavy Shanahan offense.
Throughout his career, Johnson played both tackle and guard, which would give the Bears some flexibility in case of injury. His most natural position, though, is at guard, and that’s where Chicago would use him.
