3 free agents that would help Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields
Chris Godwin
At the age of 25, free agent wide receiver Chris Godwin could be a long-term fit with Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields.
Entering the offseason, the Chicago Bears have a glaring hole at the wide receiver position. Wide receivers Darnell Mooney and Dazz Newsome are the only certainties that the Bears have at the wide receiver position before the start of free agency.
There will be an immediate focus on Allen Robinson. Outside of the 2021 season, Robinson had been the Bears’ primary wide receiver since signing with the team after the 2017 regular season. Despite his success in the Bears offense, Robinson and the team were unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension and the wide receiver played out the 2021 season on the franchise tag. With the Bears unlikely to apply the franchise tag on Robinson for a second consecutive season, it seems likely that the veteran wide receiver will play elsewhere in 2022.
While Mooney did establish a connection with quarterback Justin Fields during the 2021 season, the question remains whether or not the wide receiver can be a primary receiver on a contending team.
If the Bears are looking for a primary receiver with the goal of moving Mooney into a secondary/deep-threat type of receiving role, free agent wide receiver Chris Godwin should be the target for the team. At 25 years of age, Godwin has emerged as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL over the course of the past three seasons. Despite an injury limiting Godwin to 14 games last season, the wide receiver still compiled 1,103 receiving yard and 5 touchdowns.
