3 free agents that would help Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields
Ryan Jensen
As the Chicago Bears look to bolster their offensive line, the team should look no further than free agent Ryan Jensen.
The Cincinnati Bengals should be a cautionary tale for the Chicago Bears. Entering the offseason last year, the Bengals were at a crossroads in regards to second-year quarterback Joe Burrow. The Bengals needed to decide whether they would invest their available resources towards building the offensive line or adding skill position players to pair with Burrow.
The Bengals opted to neglect the offensive line and add skill position players as the way to improve their offense. While Burrow and rookie wide receiver Ja”Marr Chase did have an excellent season and their success was a large part of the reason why the team made it to the Super Bowl, it was in the Super Bowl in which the Bengals learned they had made a mistake by ignoring the offensive line.
Burrow was the most sacked quarterback in the league last season, and in the Super Bowl, the former LSU quarterback was sacked another 7 times. The fact of the matter is the Bengals’ offensive line was not able to protect Burrow long enough in order to make plays during the second half of the Super Bowl.
The Bears should take note. While the Burrow was the most sacked quarterback last season, the Bears’ offensive line allowed the most sacks in the NFL last season. The Bears need to make sure that quarterback Justin Fields has enough time to make plays and that is why free agent center Ryan Jensen should be the target for the team. Jensen was a Pro-Bowler with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season and the expectation is that he will be allowed to sign elsewhere after Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady made the decision to retire.
