Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields and Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence were in similar situations during the 2021 season.

The rookie seasons of both Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields and Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence should serve as cautionary tales for teams that are looking to draft a quarterback.

Both the Bears and Jaguars did not put either quarterback in a position to succeed in 2021 and it is directly related to the head coaches that the team paired the rookie quarterbacks with. The Jaguars paired Lawrence with head coach in Meyer that was trying to run a NFL team as if it was a college program. Meanwhile, the Bears paired Fields with a head coach in Nagy that had no concrete blueprint for a how to develop a rookie quarterback.

The 2022 season will be a telling season in regarding to determine what type of quarterbacks that Lawrence and Fields can be at the NFL level. The Jaguars paired Lawrence with an offensive-centric head coach in former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson. The Bears, on the other hand, paired Fields with a

Defensive-minded head coach in Matt Eberflus. Looking beyond Eberflus, the Bears have an offensive coaching staff headed by new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy that is committed to developing a game-plan around Fields.

There is no question that both Fields and Lawrence have talent and that was on display in glimpses during their rookie seasons. With both quarterbacks entering a clean slate in their second season, both could breakout in 2022.
