Any time you can get a starting offensive lineman from a National Championship-winning team, especially later in the draft, that’s usually a solid pick. With their last pick in the fifth round, the Bears go with Justin Shaffer, a guard out of Georgia who had a strong season for the Bulldogs.

Shaffer stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 330 pounds, so he offers ideal NFL size at the position. One of his biggest strengths is the fact that he has some very strong hands. As an offensive lineman, if you do not have strong hands, you can get caught holding a bit more often.

Because of his arm and hand strength, Shaffer shows some nasty finishes on tape. He definitely has some of those Quenton Nelson moments at times.

Shaffer will have to improve his overall athleticism. Pulling or getting up to the second level in a hurry isn’t where he excels. He’ll need to improve in that area if he’s going to become a starter at the pro level.

Nevertheless, the Bears are getting a starting guard from the National Champions — in the fifth round. That’s something to be proud of.
