Kevin O’Connell

Kevin O’Connell has spent the past season learning under Sean McVay and the Chicago Bears should attempt to pry him away.

In recent seasons, there has been no better coaching tree than the tree of Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay. McVay’s ability to create offensive looks that highlight the skillset of his players is the reason why team’s have zeroed in on his coaching tree. Look now further than the success that McVay had with Jared Goff, and most recently this past season, Matt Stafford.

McVay currently has an emerging offensive coordinator in Kevin O’Connell. O’Connell has interviewed for head coaching vacancies this off-season and is believed to be a candidate for the Denver Broncos’ vacancy. The Bears were not among the teams to interview O’Connell for their head coaching vacancy.

The 2021 season was O’Connell’s first season as the Rams offensive coordinator and it is possible that he looks to land an offensive coordinator position that gives him more control as McVay is the Rams’ offensive play-caller. The Bears would certainly present an intriguing option for O’Connell as he would have full control of the offense along with second-year quarterback Justin Fields at his disposal.

For the Bears, O’Connell would present the greatest opportunity to replicate the Rams’ offense without actually having McVay. If O’Connell is able to establish an offense in which Fields can flourish in, that will be setting the quarterback and team up for long-term success.
