3 offensive coordinators Chicago Bears should target from current playoff teams
Mike Kafka
After his work with Patrick Mahomes, Mike Kafka may look to continue his success with Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields
In 2018, the Chicago Bears had a second-year quarterback and were looking to maximize his potential and develop him into a franchise quarterback. The individual that the Bears chose to oversee that development was Matt Nagy as he was hired to be the team’s new head coach. Nagy was the trendy offensive coordinator for the Bears and arrived to the Bears after an endorsement from Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid.
The year is now 2022, Nagy is unemployed, and Trubisky spent the 2021 season as a backup quarterback to Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills. Meanwhile, Reid has continued to develop offensive coaches and the latest coach to gain notoriety is former Northwestern Wildcat quarterback Mike Kafka.
Kafka is currently serving as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for the Chiefs. While Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s stock has fallen over the past couple of seasons as he has been unable to land a head coaching job, Kafka’s has been on the rise. Kafka’s emergence can directly be attributed to Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes. During Mahomes’ rookie season in 2017, Kafka was tasked with shadowing the quarterback and assisting with his acclimation of the NFL lifestyle
Given the meteoric rise that Mahomes has had since 2017, Kafka has been a common target for teams seeking assistance with the development of their young quarterbacks. The Bears definitely fall in that category but there may be hesitancy to return to the Reid coaching tree.
