The Chicago Bears should still be ashamed of themselves for 2017
Sunday night capped off one of the best Division Rounds that the National Football League has ever had with one of the greatest football games ever played. The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills in overtime by a final score of 42-36. It also reminded us that the Chicago Bears are an incredibly bad franchise.
At the 2017 NFL Draft, there was a lot of anticipation for Chicago fans. It was clear that they were targeting one of the top three quarterback prospects on the board. There was the safe pick in Deshaun Watson who just got done dominating at Clemson.
Outside of some legal troubles going on right now, he has been a very productive NFL quarterback. In hindsight of the legal troubles, it isn’t a bad miss because we don’t know when he will be back to playing NFL football. If he does return, however, he will surely be good at the sport. Still, you don’t want that guy around right now.
There was also Mitchell Trubisky who was somewhat successful in college but not a very notable resume of wins or stats. That is the direction that the Bears went with. They traded up from pick three to pick two in order to select Trubisky. Since then, he became one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the NFL during his four seasons.
Now, he is actually a solid backup option for the aforementioned Buffalo Bills. That also left Patrick Mahomes left on the board for the Kansas City Chiefs to swoop up and get. Now, he is dominating the NFL playoffs with a chance to advance to his third straight Super Bowl.
The Chicago Bears made a terrible mistake during the 2017 NFL Draft.
Letting Mahomes go is the worst mistake in the history of the Bears. It isn’t like Trubisky even turned into a moderately good quarterback. He was a straight-up bust while Mahomes started off what will be a legendary career. He will surely be in the Hall of Fame and considered one of the five best quarterbacks who ever lived.
What is it that makes Mahomes so special? Imagine Tom Brady’s ability to win in all situations combined with the pure physical talent of Aaron Rodgers. Brady is considered the greatest of all time but Mahomes is on track to compete for that title.
He already has one Super Bowl (and another appearance), an MVP, and multiple other NFL accolades. He isn’t even that far into his career yet either. If he keeps this up for another ten years or more, you never know what could happen.
Year after year, week after week, and day after day we have to be reminded about this mistake made by the Bears. Mahomes and the Chiefs continue to pull out big wins like this one on Sunday night. It will be remembered forever, especially if they end up winning the Super Bowl again.
Since Trubisky moved on, the Bears drafted Justin Fields. That could turn out to be an outstanding draft pick. He has a lot of great physical tools that could turn him into a star. However, that is not a guarantee. It is also not likely that he will be as good as Mahomes at any point in his career.
This was a major mistake made by the Chicago Bears and they should still be ashamed. It is something that won’t be fixed in the eyes of the public until they finally win it all. With the current people running things over there, it is hard to see that happening any time soon.
