Ted Phillips is apparently involved in Chicago Bears’ GM and HC search
When the Chicago Bears made the decision to fire head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace on January 9, Chicago Bears chairman George McCaskey told reporters that team president Ted Phillips, while he would be in the room for the interviews, would not have direct involvement in the selection of the team’s new head coach and general manager.
During the end of the season press conference, McCaskey told reporters that Phillips would be focusing his efforts on the Bears’ Arlington Heights project. With Phillips seemingly not being directly involved in the Bears’ search for a new head coach and general manager, McCaskey admitted that the final decision would be his with assistance from consultant Bill Polian.
While McCaskey’s overall performance during the press conference was poor, he did earn some credit by removing Phillips as a decision-maker for the next head coach and general manager of the Bears. The reason why that decision was praised was because of Phillips’ track record with hires.
General manager Phil Emery, head coach Marc Trestman, Pace, and Nagy are the failures that Phillips has on his resume. Given those poor selections, there was hope that the Bears would finally get the hires of the general manager and head coach right being that Phillips would not be directly involved in the process.
In what should not come as a surprise to anyone that has followed the Bears since McCaskey became chairman of the organization, it would appear that McCaskey has once again lied to his fanbase. ESPN 1000’s and NBC Sports Chicago’s David Kaplan reported on Friday that league sources are telling him that Phillips has direct involvement in the Bears’ search process:
Ted Phillips should absolutely not be involved in the Chicago Bears HC/GM search.
When is enough going to be enough? When is the Bears’ Board of Directors going to hold McCaskey accountable for his lies? The answer to that question is never. The reason is that the Bears’ Board of Directors consists of McCaskey, Virginia McCaskey, Ted Phillips, Brian McCaskey, Ed McCaskey, Patrick McCaskey, Pat Ryan, and Andrew McKenna.
Of the eight current members of the Bears’ Board of Directors, five of them are directly related to George McCaskey. That is why nothing is going to change. The McCaskey family is so far above the court of public opinion that they are unable to comprehend the changes that are needed for their organization.
The reason why they are unable to make that comprehension is that they are making money and think that is the ultimate success. Who is the person in charge of making them money, that person is Phillips? That is why Phillips is a made man within the organization and that is never going to change.
With no change, that means that the Bears will continue to sink further and further away from reality. Friday was confirmation of one thing and that is that the McCaskey family is laughing at their perception of the intelligence of the Bears’ fanbase.
The McCaskey family believes they can say whatever they want and get away with it. The development of Ted Phillips being involved in the Chicago Bears’ search for a new general manager and head coach, confirming McCaskey lied to reporters and the team’s fanbase, is the latest black mark on the organization and should leave no hope for the future.
