The Chicago Blackhawks could get a lot of different draft picks for Patrick Kane.

The Chicago Blackhawks are a bad hockey team with a pretty bleak future. They have some nice pieces in place but they don’t have their future superstars. Alex DeBrincat, Kirby Dach, and Lukas Reichel are promising young players that should be great for a long time but none of them project to be top 25 NHL superstars like Jonathan Toews or Patrick Kane was in their youth.

In order to get players like that, you need to (unless you get lucky with a draft or free agent signing) draft them. Acquiring as many high-level picks as possible is a way to try and help that cause. They can certainly get a lot of draft capital back in a Patrick Kane deal if they wanted to go that route.

If there are no NHL-ready players coming back in the deal, two first-round picks make a lot of sense. As mentioned before, the Hawks already traded their 2022 first-round pick away. It may be lottery-protected but the chances of it being a non-lottery top-8 pick are pretty high right now which will be awful to lose out on. Getting two back (2022 and 2023) from the Rangers would be a fairly nice return in addition to that 2022 second-round pick.
