The Chicago Cubs would have been an absolutely perfect fit to land Corey Seager. They don’t have a full-time shortstop anymore with Javier Baez gone and they have a lot of young players that could use a mentor like that. Seager is a champion that has also done great things outside of just winning the World Series.

If he were to come to the Cubs, they would truly be more of a retooling team rather than a rebuilding team. He would have brought stability to a team that could use it right now as they try to figure out their future.

Instead, he is headed to the Texas Rangers on a ginormous free-agent deal. Texas has been one of the most active teams this offseason so far as he joins Marcus Semien, Jon Gray, and Kole Calhoun as players who are on their way down to play for the Rangers.

Prior to this signing, Seager was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. When they won the World Series in 2020, he was one of their best players. He won the MVP for the National League Champion Series as well as the World Series. He slashed .328/.425/.746 for an OPS of 1.171.

Corey Seager would have been great for the young Chicago Cubs team.

That is the type of presence that every young team wants right now as he has proven that he can do it on the game’s biggest stage. The Rangers may take a big step in 2022 as a result of all these moves and Seager is going to be a big part of it.

As for the Cubs, they still might try and land one of the available shortstops that are still out there. They also might do nothing and prove that they are actually rebuilding instead of retooling. Winning in 2022 is going to be hard for them anyway so the former is probably a better idea.

Missing out on Seager might bother some fans. Despite it being a perfect fit, it was probably a pipe dream because of where the Cubs sit as an organization. They are a little bit away from being able to sign one of these top guys that become available.

They would have re-signed Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, and Kris Bryant if they were serious about winning in 2022 and beyond. Hopefully, the rebuild doesn’t last too long as they might have to tear it down in order to build it back up. Seager going to the Rangers might put that into perspective for them.
