Chicago Bears: 4 biggest regrets from first half of season
By Ryan Heckman
4. The Chicago Bears should regret not going after Odell Beckham Jr.
Look, would he have signed with the Bears? Obviously, that was a long shot. But, for the sake of Fields’ development and potentially having a longer-term solution at a future WR1, the Bears should have put in a claim for Odell Beckham Jr.
Next year, the Bears are going to lose Allen Robinson to free agency. He has already had one foot out the door since contract negotiations broke off over a year ago. Now, the Bears will be faced with finding their next true number one wide receiver.
Odell Beckham is a game-changing receiver, still. I firmly believe that. He is a guy who demands the football, but does incredible things with it in his hands. For whatever reason, it didn’t work out in Cleveland. The connection wasn’t there between he and Baker Mayfield.
But, for a young quarterback like Fields, one could assume that Beckham would get plenty of targets. He is the type of security blanket a developing quarterback would come to know and love.
Instead, the Bears decided to stand pat and not even attempt to go after Beckham. Next year, they’ll be hard-pressed to find a legitimate number one wideout with their draft capital.
