Chicago Blackhawks: Seth Jones’ contract already looks horrid

At 0-5-1, the last place Chicago Blackhawks need no introduction. They are a terrible hockey team but it is for different reasons than you probably think. They have a very nice roster on paper but their coach in Jeremy Colliton is not right for this job and needs to go right now. They also have a horrible general manager in Stan Bowman who should have been fired five years ago.

There is another pressing issue facing the Blackhawks now. It is the contract of Seth Jones. In order to justify eight years at 9.5 million dollars, he needs to be one of the best defensemen in the National Hockey League. That doesn’t even kick in until next year as his previous contract of 5.4 million is still it for this year.

As of right now, it is one of the worst contracts in the entire NHL. He is making the same amount of money as Charlie McAvoy of the Boston Bruins who is one of the best young defensemen in the game right now. It is a sad conversation that we are having about Jones right now. It isn’t a done deal that this contract is bad but it is certainly going down that road.

So far this season, Jones has been awful. The entire Blackhawks organization has been bad as well but Jones hasn’t been much of a help. They are being outscored 11-1 when Jones is on the ice at even strength. That is absolutely not what you want from the new number one that you are paying all of that money.

He has one assist at even strength on the one goal and then his other three assists (four points total on the season) came on the power play. Those man-advantage points are certainly going to come but he needs to be better all around. He may never justify the 9.5 million dollar cap hit over the next eight years after this one but he could still play much better than he is right now.

Jones isn’t being helped much by the coaching staff right now either. With the Hawk’s current system that they use with Jeremy Colliton, they can’t defend worth anything and they certainly can’t score. The Hawks have the NHL record running right now of the longest stretch to start the season without leading at any point in a game.

This season is important for Jones and the Hawks as they went into the season expecting to be a playoff team. Things have not clicked yet in any way, shape, or form and it is hard to see that happening any time soon. Hopefully, at minimum, Jones doesn’t allow that deal to become too much of a disaster.
