Chicago Cubs: Rizzo and Schwarber show up in AL Wild Card Game
The Chicago Cubs are not in the postseason. A year after winning the NL Central Division, they were forced to sell off a bunch of expiring contracts and begin a rebuild. However, they have a lot of former players playing in the postseason. Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber, Anthony Rizzo, Jon Lester, Craig Kimbrel, Ryan Tepera, and Joc Pederson are all former Cubs that are seeing some postseason action.
In Tuesday night’s American League Wild Card Game between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, Anthony Rizzo faced off against Kyle Schwarber. They each led off for their respective teams and they each played first base on the defensive side of things. It was really cool to see these two stars compete against each other.
Each of them was really good in the game as well. Each of them hit a big home run at their points of the game. It was really cool to see them each hit a home run while both leading off and playing the same position. These are guys who won a World Series together with the Cubs so they are royal in this town forever.
Schwarber’s team came out on top with a final score of 6-2. It was the second time that Schwarber hit a playoff home run off of Gerrit Cole. You might remember when the Chicago Cubs played the 2015 National League Wild Card Game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs won that game on the road and Schwarber’s home run off of Cole (who started that game for Pittsburgh) was a big part of it.
Some former Chicago Cubs greats are playing well for other organizations.
It is tough to see Rizzo’s season end on a one and done but it had to happen to someone. Now, we will see him begin to contemplate his future as his contract is up. The New York Yankees certainly are going to try and sign him but they may not be able to if he doesn’t want to be there.
This was a fantastic game between two very good teams. In the end, however, Boston was able to pull away. Now, we will watch Jon Lester’s St. Louis Cardinals take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Wild Card Game.
That one is going to be very interesting as the St. Louis Cardinals are the hottest league in the league playing against the most talented team in the Los Angeles Dodgers. It is fair to assume that most Cubs fans are probably rooting for the Los Angeles Dodgers to take this one from Chicago’s biggest rival. The postseason sure is fun and it is exciting to watch some former Cubs greats play well there.
