Chicago Bears Roster: 5 players Bears can’t afford to cut
By Ryan Heckman
The Chicago Bears cannot afford to cut cornerback Tre Roberson
Here’s the crazy part: Tre Roberson might actually deserve a shot to start opposite Jaylon Johnson. The Bears have not had a guy emerge just yet.
Will it be Kindle Vildor? How about Desmond Trufant, who hasn’t played a minute of preseason ball, nor practiced with the team for a while due to personal matters?
It definitely cannot be Artie Burns, who could simply serve solely as an emergency cornerback if he makes the roster.
Roberson could end up taking this job by default, because nobody else has done so. His performance in Tennessee makes him a guy the Bears can’t afford to cut, because he’s the only cornerback who has done anything with his preseason snaps.
Saturday night against the Titans, Roberson came up with a tackle for loss and an interception he returned for a touchdown. Just those two things alone should merit Sean Desai’s attention.
As Desai tries to get this defense back on the takeaway train, Roberson’s big play certainly helped in that area. Both Roberson and inside linebacker Danny Trevathan were able to partake in the takeaway bucket in this one.
