Chicago Bears: 3 players who deserve to stick on the roster
By Ryan Heckman
Inside linebacker Caleb Johnson deserves to stick with the Chicago Bears
Quietly, inside linebacker has been a bit of a concern for the Bears. Danny Trevathan has slowed down over the last year or two and is currently not 100 percent healthy. Signing Alec Ogletree looks like a phenomenal move at this point, and if Trevathan isn’t healthy, he could start the season next to Roquan Smith.
Behind those three, though, it’s murky. Christian Jones is probably the most trustworthy of the backups and should have no problem making this team. But, then it gets tough.
Josh Woods has missed some tackles in both games this preseason. Fellow backup Joel Iyiegbuniwe has looked atrocious, quite frankly. Neither have impressed.
The one guy who has made plays in both preseason games thus far is undrafted rookie Caleb Johnson out of Houston Baptist. Against Miami, Johnson came up with five tackles (four solo) including two tackles for loss. In the game against Buffalo, Johnson shined bright.
Against the Bills, Johnson tallied three tackles but, more importantly, recovered two fumbles. He found himself around the ball constantly — and that’s something Sean Desai wants to see out of this group in 2021. The Bears need takeaways. They need guys who will flock to the football and have a nose for it — and Johnson has shown that so far.
