RP. Chicago Cubs. Craig Kimbrel. 46. player. 9.

The Chicago Cubs might get a really nice return if they trade Craig Kimbrel this year.

The Chicago Cubs have loved everything they have gotten out of Craig Kimbrel so far this season. He has been a magnificent closer for the Cubs in every way. He went from being a disaster of a signing to a guy who has helped them close out big wins with ease. There is an argument to be made that Kimbrel is the best closer in baseball right now. There are a few closers out there, including one on the other side of town, that might disagree with that but there is an argument to be made.

Kimbrel has made 21 saves for the Cubs so far this season. He has a 2.1 WAR as a closer because of how dominant he has been. His ERA of 0.53 and WHIP of 0.653 tell you everything you need to know about him. He also has 58 strikeouts in 33.2 innings pitched. He has been one of the best relievers in the history of the sport and now he looks like his old self.

With all of that said, the Cubs would still be competitive if they traded Kimbrel away for a worthy package. He has an option for next year which means the Cubs could get even more for him which is why they should do it. There are plenty of other good relievers in the Cubs bullpen right now that can close out games for them. They are a better team with Kimbrel but they wouldn’t be noncompetitive without him.
