The Chicago Cubs should consider themselves lucky that Craig Kimbrel is even tradable.

The Chicago Cubs signed Craig Kimbrel a few years back hoping that they would be able to win another World Series with the core that won the one back in 2016. He came with high expectations and has mostly failed to meet all of them. His first half with the Cubs did not go well but 2021 saw him turn things around big time. He is back to being one of the best in the league for now and the Cubs should trade him while that remains the case. They simply cannot wait until it is too late or they will regret it.

The White Sox have Liam Hendriks and he isn’t going to lose his spot as the closer anytime soon. However, if you had Kimbrel as the setup man and backup closer for days where you give Liam a rest, you are in good shape as a bullpen. The White Sox might be smart to do what they can to add another bullpen arm before the trade deadline and not many available are better than Kimbrel.

Andrew Dalquist and Jimmy Lambert are both right-handed pitchers in the White Sox organization right now. The Cubs could use as much pitching help in the system as they can get as the future there needs a major overhaul. Dalquist is the White Sox number five prospect and Lambert is their number 15 guy. If they landed two prospects like this for Kimbrel at this point in his contract, they should thank their lucky stars.

The Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs don’t make trades with one another very often but you just never know. Just like 2017, one team was trying to win it all and one team was trying to add as much talent as possible. They can make something fair happen if they wanted to.
