Chicago Cubs Rumors: 3 splash trades to make with New York Yankees
By Ryan Heckman
The Chicago Cubs could trade Javier Baez to the New York Yankees
It might seem unthinkable at the moment, but trading a franchise cornerstone like Javier Baez probably isn’t out of the question for a team that goes into a full-on fire sale. If the Cubs indeed decide to go that route, they could get a great deal in return for a player like Javy.
Trading Baez to the Yankees would then mean he or Gleyber Torres would have to switch positions. Luckily for the Yankees, both Baez and Torres have experience playing second base. Baez did so back when the Cubs were starting Addison Russell at shortstop. A switch like that wouldn’t be the end of the world for either player, and would give the Yankees a heck of a duo there.
In a return for Baez, the Cubs would probably be looking for a handful of top prospects. The Yankees would give up their number one overall prospect in outfielder Jasson Dominguez, to start. Then, they would include shortstop Oswald Pereza, their current number four overall prospect. To round out the deal, New York would send their number eight prospect, righty Yoendrys Gomez to Chicago.
In Dominguez, specifically, the Cubs would be getting a young, raw teenage phenom who can switch hit and possesses tremendous power in his bat. He’s incredibly crafty at the plate, as evidenced by his 11 plate appearances thus far with the FCS Yankees and zero hits — yet a .545 on base percentage.
Getting a future star like Dominguez in the deal makes this trade enticing, but the other couple of prospects puts it over the edge in Chicago’s favor.
