It is quite shocking what just a few days can do. Just a couple of weeks ago, the Chicago Cubs were in first place and looked like they could be buyers at the 2021 MLB trade deadline.

Then, the wheels fell off. Now, the Cubs are 6.5 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers and losers of seven of their last 10 games — including six straight losses.

At one point, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the Cubs would look to add talent this month. Jed Hoyer told The Athletic just a month ago that the Cubs would do just that. However, things have changed drastically and David Ross’ crew could look a whole lot different in a few weeks — for the worse.

It seemed inevitable that the Cubs would eventually break up their core. With how the past few seasons have gone, the writing has been on the wall.

Expect the Chicago Cubs to be major sellers at this year’s MLB trade deadline.

Since their World Series win five years ago, the Cubs have functioned as though winning no longer matters. Moves like allowing Jon Lester to walk away or trading Yu Darvish for practically nothing speak volumes as to just how important winning is to the Ricketts.

News flash: it’s not very important.

With the World Series team hardly intact anymore and just a few key players left, the Cubs may do something serious at the deadline. They could look to deal one or two big-time players.

If they do so, though, fans would expect a haul in return for one of the key players on this team. The following five trades would certainly shake things up and signal the Cubs into a full-on rebuild.
