Chicago Cubs’ starting pitcher trade candidates: Max Scherzer

Don’t look now, but the Washington Nationals are right back in the thick of a potential playoff run. Washington is 7.5 games back of the final Wild Card spot in the National League, however they’re just 5.0 games back of the division-leading New York Mets as well.

Are the Nationals actually going to sell in 2021? If you were to ask that question a month ago, the answer would have been a resounding yes. But, the way things are going now? That’s tough to answer.

The name everybody wants to talk about when it comes to the Nationals and a trade deadline topic is, of course, starting pitcher Max Scherzer. If the Cubs were to even entertain a possible trade, they would have to give up something significant.

In the biggest deal yet, the Cubs trade their no. 2 overall prospect in Brennen Davis, no. 15 overall prospect Riley Thompson and no. 17 prospect Kevin Made in exchange for Scherzer.

This season, Scherzer has an ERA of 2.19 and a WHIP of 0.826. Scherzer is one of the most decorated pitchers of this generation and at one time made seven All Star appearances in a row. Scherzer has won the Cy Young Award three times and also led the NL in strikeouts the same number of times. To top it off, he’s led the Majors in wins four separate times.
