Chicago Cubs: There is one interesting note from the no-hitter
For the first time in franchise history, the Chicago Cubs thew what is known as a “combined no-hitter”. Zach Davies, Ryan Tepera, Andrew Chafin, and Craig Kimbrel all went out there and didn’t give up a single hit. As a unit, they allowed eight walks so it wasn’t a perfect game (or even close to one) but it was certainly a no-hitter. It may now have the same feel as when one player does it by himself but it is still cool nonetheless.
There is one fact about the no-hitter that Chicago Cubs fans may find funny.
There is one fact, however, that came out after the game that is one of the more wild stories that you will ever hear about a game like this. It isn’t a statistic or anything like that, it is just a face that is so strange about the way this all came about.
Zach Davies came out of the game as his pitch count was in the 90s. If he would have stayed in the game to try and complete a no-hitter, he would have had to have north of 130 pitches and guys just don’t do that anymore. Let’s be honest, he would have given up a hit as he was clearly running out of gas.
Bringing in Tepera to replace him was clearly the right decision because winning was the most important thing on David Ross’s mind at the time. They are in a tight division battle right now and beating good teams is important to that.
After the game, Craig Kimbrel confirmed that nobody in the bullpen knew that there was a combined no-hitter going. When you watch the replay of the final out, it is clear that Kimbrel is visibly confused as to why everyone is celebrating. Apparently, the hits column is not visible from the bullpen at Dodger stadium so they were all in the dark on what was going on.
That has to be one of the funnier stories across the league so far this season. Every player in the bullpen had no clue that it was going on and three of them were a huge part of it. It makes you wonder if they were better off not knowing about it. Regardless, it worked because they were able to get the job done.
Zach Davies deserves most of the credit as he pitched six of the nine innings but the bullpen had a big helping hand in getting the job done. This is something that fans will remember for a long time as it does not happen very often.
