Darnell Mooney could be the difference between a good and great rookie season for Justin Fields

Not only will Robinson be important for Fields’ success this year, but so will Darnell Mooney.

Stretching the field was something the Bears failed to do in recent years, but with Mooney, they have a legitimate deep threat who opens things up. For Fields to have a guy like him means that the offense can get going in a hurry, and at any moment in time.

Taking deep shots has some to do with confidence as well, which we know Fields does not lack. However, if Fields is able to connect on a couple of those long passes with Mooney, and do it earlier in the season, the confidence and maturity will only continue to blossom.

At Ohio State, Fields had a guy who was a pretty good deep threat in Chris Olave. For the entirety of his Buckeye career, Olave has averaged 16.1 yards per reception and actually got up to 17.9 in his 2019 campaign.

Fields is no stranger to throwing the deep ball. He has the arm to do so, and if Mooney has a great showing in his sophomore year, he and Fields could form quite the connection for years to come.
