The Chicago Bears could sign safety Jeff Heath

When looking at the changes made this offseason, not much was done in the safety room. Quite honestly, that’s a positive thing. Continuity certainly counts, especially when the players are good ones.

The Bears have a formidable starting safety duo in Eddie Jackson and Tashaun Gipson, the same couple of guys that started all last year for them. Behind those two are some long-time veterans of Chicago who began their career with the Bears and continue to stick around — DeAndre Houston-Carson and Deon Bush.

The room is pretty much solidified, but in order to ensure there is improvement from both Jackson and Gipson in terms of playmaking, the Bears should continue to add competition. New defensive coordinator Sean Desai specializes in defensive backs, and bringing in another veteran like Jeff Heath would be a solid move.

Heath was a 3-year starter for the Dallas Cowboys before spending last season with the Las Vegas Raiders. Heath had one more year on his deal, but was victim of a cap-saving cut by Vegas in the spring.

He is more of a strong safety, which could help push Gipson a bit in camp. Last year with the Raiders, Heath started just five games but came away with three picks. Still searching for a job, Heath would likely come fairly cheap at this point in the offseason.
