Chicago Cubs: 2 players who justified team’s faith, 1 who hasn’t
Justified
Craig Kimbrel has done an amazing job with the Chicago Cubs this season.
Craig Kimbrel has been one of the best closers in Major League Baseball so far this season. That is something nobody predicted would happen as we approach the middle of June 2021. He was awful in previous years of his Cubs tenure but he has figured something out this year. He touches 99 and 100 miles per hour when he needs to and it has made it so hard for teams to get anything going when he is in.
Kimbrel, in the grand scheme of things, was a bad signing by Theo Epstein and his crew. It is paying off that they put faith in him right now though. If he was old Cubs Kimbrel, this team might not be where they are right now. He has justified any faith that they have had in him so far. Not many would have done what he has done in these circumstances.
Now the question remains, what should the Cubs do with him? They can trade him to a team willing to pay the price while his value is high or they can keep him. If they keep him, they can even extend him if they believe that this good year isn’t a fluke. The risk in that is him falling backward again. It is certainly an interesting situation but so far he has been great.
