The Chicago Blackhawks might have to give up something Toronto needs to land Marner.

Of course, the Maple Leafs are going to love having that first-round pick that they get if they do in fact trade Mitch Marner. The Hawks will likely have a somewhat high pick so the Leafs would love to have it. No matter what team the Leafs make a deal with for Marner if they trade him, they are going to expect a first.

The Leafs really need defense. The Hawks do as well but trading Adam Boqvist and Ian Mitchell can be justified. For Boqvist, he just isn’t really that good. The Leafs might be able to get the most out of him with some of the offensive stars that they have but he hasn’t lived up to the hype with the Blackhawks at all. He is a power-play specialist and he isn’t even really good at that either.

Ian Mitchell, on the other hand, is a solid young defenseman. He hasn’t gotten the opportunity yet to show what he can do but his game translates to the NHL a lot better. If the Leafs added both of these young defensemen, they would probably do much better than the Hawks at putting them in a position to succeed. Marner’s production would be with giving up this level of asset capital.
