Veterans unlikely to make the Chicago Bears roster: Artie Burns

Last year, the Bears signed Artie Burns in free agency but he ended up missing the entire season after suffering a torn ACL in camp. This season, Chicago decided to give it one more go with Burns.

Coming back from an ACL injury at the cornerback position, though, is not an easy thing to do. Granted, the Bears need depth there but Burns will still have a tough road ahead. He joins a team that’s mostly ready to win right now, and if he’s to supplant guys like Duke Shelley or Kindle Vildor on this roster, he’ll have to impress greatly during camp.

The Bears also drafted Thomas Graham Jr. whom they really like, and Graham will have a role sooner rather than later. Obviously, Jaylon Johnson and Desmond Trufant are the starters here.

Burns offers the Bears a lot of speed, which is always an advantage to have in some areas. But, just how healthy is he going to be after coming back from injury? More importantly, Burns has been mostly a bust since being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2016 NFL Draft. He may have speed, but he still gets beaten quite often. The Bears may still opt to sign another free agent to come in and compete, and if they do, Burns is going to have a difficult time making this roster.
