Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields wants to see his fellow rookies compete

"“I think everybody on our team should be striving for a starting job and if you’re not, then there’s no reason for you to be here.”"

This type of statement should give hope and motivation to every player on the Bears roster. Fields is not about players simply making the team and taking up a roster spot. He wants to see effort from every single one of his teammates — the type of effort that says, ‘I want to start. I want to play.’

Fields is right. These guys are out on the field competing at the world’s highest level. All of them are world-class athletes. They’ve made it this far. What’s to stop them from not just making an NFL roster, but earning a starting position?

Why not go after a guy like Allen Robinson if you’re Dazz Newsome? Who is to say Larry Borom can’t snatch the starting spot away from someone like Germain Ifedi? And why wouldn’t Khalil Herbert look to supplant Damien Williams or Tarik Cohen?

Competition breeds success, and Fields understands that. The way he’s conducted himself thus far clearly proves he is not about to allow anyone, let alone himself, settle for mediocrity. His desire is to see the highest level of competition out of every one of his fellow rookies — so much so, that they’re making the veterans just a little bit uncomfortable.

That’s a leader.
