Chicago Bears rookies fighting for their future: OT Gunnar Vogel

If there’s one position that is completely open going into offseason activities, it’s at offensive tackle. There are zero starters set and the depth could use some padding. This bodes very well for undrafted free agent Gunnar Vogel, a tackle out of Northwestern.

For Vogel, he has the chance to show he can be a reserve lineman on the final roster. Not only that, but he could be doing so for a team not so far from his recent stomping grounds. Coming out of Northwestern, Vogel should be familiar with Chicago and won’t have to go far.

Vogel is definitely a prospect who flew far under the radar during the draft process. There weren’t any professionally-done scouting reports available to the public. None of the major outlets decided to cover him with that kind of content, which is rare. Vogel definitely has a long road ahead of him if he’s to make his imprint as an NFL player.

Fortunately, there’s only one sure thing at the tackle position in Chicago and that’s fellow rookie Teven Jenkins starting at one of those spots. Other than Jenkins starting, everything else is a question mark. Another rookie, Larry Borom, could work his way into the other starting spot or the Bears could go with Germain Ifedi or Elijah Wilkinson.

Vogel has a chance to stick around, but it begins in minicamp. He’ll have to come out with an edge and a fire that the coaches have been looking for up front. Will he stick around? We’ll see.
