Chicago Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney could compete in the 100 Meter Dash

After seeing the Bears select Darnell Mooney in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft last year, a lot of fans had to quickly jump online to see what he was all about. Mooney wasn’t a highly-touted collegiate prospect, as evidenced by his being a fifth-round selection.

One of the first things fans saw when doing a little research was that this Mooney kid is a bolt of lightning. Watching his college tape, you saw time after time where Mooney would get behind a defense without a problem.

Obviously, the number one question when talking about a fast receiver is, what’s his 40 time? Mooney ran a 4.38 in his 40-yard dash, which by all means is extremely fast. It’s not quite as fast as Byrd or Goodwin, but make no mistake, Mooney is one of the faster players on this roster.

He also never really competed in track and field. Growing up, Mooney was a basketball and football player. Therefore, if he put a bit of training into it, he may be able to improve that straight-line track speed for the sake of competing in an event like the 100 Meter Dash.

This entire conversation simply brings light to the fact that Mooney, along with Byrd and Goodwin, are going to give Bears fans quite a show this year when they’re making play after play and catching long passes from new franchise quarterback Justin Fields. Matt Nagy not only has himself a quarterback, but plenty of speed to work with at the receiver position. The 2021 NFL season should be a lot of fun.
