Chicago Bears: 3 positions that still need work after the draft
By Ryan Taylor
The Chicago Bears still need to address the safety position
The Chicago Bears could use a running-mate to give to star safety Eddie Jackson.
The Bears have completely neglected this position outside of the draft and even from an undrafted free agency standpoint. They did, however, sign Deandre Houston-Carson this offseason on a one-year $1.1 million deal.
Is this their solution to the safety position?
It certainly could be, seeing as Teshaun Gipson still has a starting position as the strong safety on the Bears’ defense.
Last season, Gipson allowed a 63.6 completion percentage against his matchups, which ranks 22nd amongst all safeties in the league. He played and started in all 16 regular-season games the Bears played. He recorded two interceptions, seven passes defended, and one fumble recovery in his first season in Chicago.
Houston-Carson, in just 91 snaps played all season allowed 75 percent of passes to be completed. He recorded three defended passes and just one fumble recovery on the year.
It would be relevant to mention that Eddie Jackson had an unimpressive statistical season too, allowing a 67.4 percent completion rate to his opponents after two Pro-Bowl seasons.
The Bears should dabble in free agency to better this position to find another safety to add to the crew. Considering the new defensive coordinator Sean Desai used to work with safeties before his promotion to defensive coordinator, he should promote the signing of another.
