Chicago Bears NFL Draft 2021: 5 underrated first-round targets
By Ryan Heckman
Underrated first-round targets for the Chicago Bears: S Trevon Moehrig, TCU
The Bears do not currently have a firm answer at the strong safety position, but they miss Adrian Amos dearly. Over the past few seasons, both Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Teshaun Gipson have done a fine job filling in. However, neither one of them laid the wood like Amos did.
The Bears need a replacement — a long-term replacement. They need a safety who can be the true box safety and make plays not only in the run game, but help the linebackers out as well in the passing game.
At pick number 20, do not be shocked if the Bears take arguably this year’s best safety in TCU product Trevon Moehrig.
This kid is a do-it-all type of defensive back who has tremendous ball skills but is also a willing participant in stopping the run. To have a physical presence at strong safety, yet a guy who can still make plays on the ball, would be a huge addition to this secondary.
Moehrig has accumulated 20 passes defended over the past two seasons, along with six interceptions. If the Bears were to take him in the first, they’d be getting a guy who can not only be counted on to start next to Jackson, but may compete with Jackson for who comes up with the most plays on the ball all year.
