The Chicago Blackhawks made one last-minute trade with the Vancouver Canucks.

When the Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks made the trade involving Matthew Highmore and Adam Gaudette, you probably assumed that would be the last deal made between the two for the year. Well, they snuck in one last deal before the trade deadline buzzer. It isn’t one that is going to change the path of each franchise but each team could take advantage of the situation if it is smart (and lucky).

The Blackhawks sent Madison Bowey to the Vancouver Canucks so that they can upgrade a fifth-round pick to a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. That is the type of trade that will take years to see if either team got anything out of it. It was certainly a nice risk for the Blackhawks as they wanted a higher pick for a guy that they are probably never going to use long term. There are other defensemen that are younger and more talented that have a better chance of being in the lineup going forward.

Trade Grade: C

Overall, it was a decent day for Stan Bowman and the Chicago Blackhawks. They made a few trades that nobody saw coming and they did a good job acquiring assets for players that are on expiring deals. Bowman still has a lot of work to do to get back into the good graces of the fans but this was a good trade deadline for him. That doesn’t excuse him for a lot of past mistakes but you have to give credit where it is due for one day.
